Newsroom life observations

I have been working around journalists and journalism students for a few years now and I can't help but notice the many things we have in common.

1. We are all interested in current events and writing the news but we also all share a love for Post-it notes and the way they make a pretty yellow frame around our iMac monitors.

2. We like to curse. It's true, if you hang out with the Foghorn staff on a press night you will know what I am talking about. We do it so much that we tend to ignore or not even realize when there's a kid in the room.
If we are ever observed in our natural element, the most common words to come out of our mouths will be the four-letter-word variety kind.

3. Today, we have so many tools that help us get through a deadline, meeting someone for an interview and writing our stories. We have GPS, iPhones, Blackberries, Google, etc.
However, none of these will ever be as important and iconic as the journalists' number one tool: the reporter's notebook.
The notebook doesn't need batteries or wireless connections. All it needs is a dedicated journalist holding it.

4. Free food. There is nothing more we like when attending a press conference, speech or award ceremony than free food.
And after we get our food, we like to go back to our desks and eat it there. We all love 'desk-dinning'

5. Procrastination. Since we are always on deadline, we love to put stuff off until the last minute...
Which reminds me that I am on deadline so I will have to finish this post later....
