The 2009 Texas Bluesfest, a free event organized by Mando Alaniz to promote awareness for The American Cancer Society and bring a taste of something different to the local music scene, will be held Saturday from 2 to 10 p.m. at the Corpus Christi Harley Davidson Music Grounds, 502 S.P.I.D next to the Corpus Christi Harley Davidson shop.
An after-party featuring 15-year-old Texas Blues prodigy Clay Melton will follow the concert at Dr. Rockit’s. Alaniz has been organizing the event since 2005 when it was called the Rhythm & Blues Fest. He is a seasoned musician who plays percussion and is now owner and manager of Houston’s AMA Music Group.
The idea to organize the event came to him when he was vacationing in Corpus Christi, his hometown. “I play blues and I’ve got to do something here,” said Alaniz, “It helps break the monotony of having nothing to do in Corpus, especially with the economy right now. It’s a free concert that also raises awareness.” Performers scheduled to play are Corpus Christi’s Nate’s Rock Bottom Blues, C.C Jam Band, Hilda Lamas, John Cortez Blues Band and Houston’s Clay Melton Band and RC & The Pirates. The Smokin’ Waters Band will also perform with special guest Louis Quinn. The after party featuring Melton and the Clay Melton Band begins at 10 p.m. and continues to 2 a.m. Though Melton just turned 15, his music is far from the Jonas Brothers genre.
He began playing at 11 and credits Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, John Mayer, Dave Matthews and the legendary Jimi Hendrix as his musical inspiration. The concert is free, but donations may be made in support of RBA and the Thanks-for-Giving Concert for Cancer and The American Cancer Society. Miller Light and Andrews Distributing, Southern Star Brewery, Fiesta Margaritas, The Vent Magazine, Dr. Rockit’s Blues Bar, Herbs Burgers, Corpus Christi- Harley Davidson, Innovative Marketing, RBA Baseball Academy, Hebert Irrigation, Knuckleheads, CCMagOnlne, Clear Communications, the Island Moon, Beautifycc.com and The Crush Girls are sponsoring the event.
