The Del Mar College Concert Band, under the leadership of director Darrell Brown, and the Corpus Christi Wind Symphony took the audience on a trip around the world during the “Originals” concert at the Richardson Auditorium.
Many of the pieces commissioned by the DMC Band were previously unpublished, the reason the concert was named “Originals.”
The band premiered a composition entitled “To Lie in State Beneath The Sands” by Dr. Neil Flory, DMC assistant professor of Music. Flory’s interpretation of the historic “passacaglia” was created as a compliment to a poem by the same name written by his wife, Elaine.
“I intended to show that we can go back through the sands of time and rediscover things that were forgotten and bring them back in all their glory and splendor,” said Flory. “I think [the band] did really well. Mr. Brown knew exactly what the piece was about and he did a great job preparing them.”
Several other faculty members performed with the concert band. Assistant Professor of Music Scott Hagarty played a trumpet solo and William Lipman, professor of Music, performed a clarinet solo.
The Corpus Christi Wind Symphony under the leadership of conductor Bryce Taylor played a selections consisting of original compositions that varied from Russian to Italian music. “We are a volunteer group and we practice once a week in Robstown,” said Taylor.
Between selections, Taylor told the audience that students and community members should “take advantage of the wonderful facilities available” at DMC, like the Richardson Performance Hall and the Music Program.
“If you want to hear interesting music, don’t rule out the DMC Music Department,” said Flory. He said DMC hosts an extensive line-up of events and a schedule of events can be obtained from the Music Office, located in the Fine Arts Building.
