The University of Texas has the Longhorn, Texas Christian University has the Horned Frog, Tyler Junior College has the Apache and Del Mar College has…has…what does Del Mar College have?

Lately, this is a question that a few students have been asking. Are we the Dreamers, the Beacons of Light or the Lighthouses?

It may be time for Del Mar College to think about creating an identity for students, faculty and staff to be proud of. What we need is a branding strategy that will create a sense of dignity so that we as members of the DMC community can proudly proclaim that we are Del Mar College (insert nickname here).

It wasn’t very long ago that Del Mar College had a mascot. Many people in the DMC community took pride in calling themselves the Del Mar College Vikings.

Ah, the Viking . . . conquerors and warriors who colonized most of Europe in the Eighth Century through the Eleventh Century, a symbol of strength and perseverance.

Sure, the Viking can be attributed with many negative qualities as well, but so can many other mascots.

Rumor has it that the reason the Viking was sent packing was because of those negative characteristics that the Viking symbolized. If that’s the case, it’s time to let it go and stop focusing on the negative. In this day and age, we should have enough self confidence to be able to embrace an identity without worrying about a past that had nothing to do with us.

The people of Del Mar College want an identity. Bring back the Viking! Bring back the Viking! Bring back the Viking!
