“It’s not who you know, it’s who knows you,” Del Mar College President Mark Escamilla once said during an interview. It’s a great thought to ponder, but what does it mean?

Well, as students of higher education this statement should really be taken to heart. Each one of us knows who we know – that’s a given. Yet, how many of us know the people who know us?

As we go through our daily routine, who is the person we portray? Think about all those who are our mentors and advisors. Imagine all those educators and administrators we encounter on a daily basis.

Think about how each of us presents ourselves to those who guide us into the next steps of our lives in our pursuit of the American dream.

Now, take a look in the mirror and imagine looking through their eyes. Who do they see? How do they know you? Are you the 30-year-old man with pants hanging 12 inches below his waist? Are you the girl who likes to wear your thong outside of your pants?

Understandably, we are a country of free expression and “to each his or her own” when it comes to how you would like to portray yourself to the general public. However, when asked by future employers, partners or contacts, how will people respond to the question “What do you remember about (insert your name here)?”

It’s time to honestly think about the image you would like to convey to those who will remember you for who you are.

Instead of being known for the color of your underwear, try to convey an image of somebody who made every attempt to present themselves in a successful manner.

Be known as one who was actively looking for opportunities to market themselves for the future. Clothes don’t define a person, but they can sure influence public perception.
