With horrible quality fake blood, bad acting and a long drawn out plot, “The House of The Devil” is a sad disappointment to indie-horror audiences. Set in the early 1980s the film includes, high-waist jeans, feathered hair and rotary dial phones. For an audience craving a horror film that will have them on the edge of their seats, this will not be it.

The interesting, early 1980s themed opening credits may leave one with high hopes, but falls short. The film follows college sophomore, Samantha Hughes, taking a babysitting job that proves far from normal. Even after hearing an ominous voice on the other end of the phone call when accepting the job, she puts all instinct aside for the money she needs to pay rent. After watching her complete multiple days of typical tasks, an audience’s attention may begin to wander.

On her way to the eerie babysitting job, and the anticipation of action and blood arises. But, yet again the audience is left to watch Samantha and her best friend bicker over the job. The lack of interesting conversation, along with the fact that nothing has happened makes one wonder if this really is a horror movie.

When the film finally reaches its climax, a viewer is bombarded with low quality fake blood and bad action fighting. For the hour the audience waited for the little action this film offers, it proved far from adequate. It does include the woman victim in little clothes choosing to run further upstairs than out of the house. One might assume this is why “The House of The Devil” falls under the horror movie genre.

If wanting a movie that will have you guessing what will happen next and scared to look straight at the screen, this movie will let you down. When a friend asks, “What is ‘The House of The Devil’ about?” Simply answer, “About an hour and a half too long. “
