Texas A&M-Corpus Christi student David Davila has sent out the word that he is looking for talented artists including those from DMC to be part of “What’s Good,” an exhibit held on Peoples Street in front of Produce.
The event will have pieces on display from local artists, a street art expo and a fashion show. There is no cover and all of fans of art are encouraged to attend.
A senior at TAMU-CC, Davila is a noted Corpus Christi artist. His works are constantly seen at the annual “Friends and Lovers” art shows and have been recognized in other cities including San Diego and New York.
He has done work for local business such as painting a background for Benjamin’s Surf Shop. Davila bases his works on the neighborhood he grew up in, with all the pieces representing “the barrio” in certain way.
He has an endless list of influences, some them close friends he admires. When Davila is with his friends, they get ideas and help each other in learning new techniques. One of Davila’s influences is Salvador Dahli.
In addition to his work as an artist, Davila is also very involved with activities at college. Davila and others founded Hispanics for the Advancement and Community and Educational Readiness (HACER), a program designed to advance the education and opportunities for Hispanics gaining a higher education.
Davila is also president of Delta Chi fraternity and a freshman mentor. Davila said being involved in all the organizations is preparing him for what he wants to accomplish once he is graduated.
He hopes to run a public relations firm based in the city he grew up in and wants to see the city progress in the arts and music and live up to its potential.
Doing as much as he can while still attending school to get his B.A. in communication studies and a minor in public relations, he wants to make a difference in the community.
Davila has a goal for this community and is determined to meet it. “We need to spark imagination, if you could do that, you could do anything,” he said.
With the event on his birthday, Davila is making a step toward his goal. All artists are invited to participate and for more information, contact Davila at davila02tx@yahoo.com.
