Showcase brings fashion to Corpus Christi

Coastal Bend Fashion Show highlights local brands and boutiques

“Fifteen minutes until show time,” yelled Andrea Dupper, back stage manager for Coastal Bend Fashion Showcase runway shows, as half – naked models ran around with hairdressers and stylists chasing them to fix any imperfections before they walked the stage. “The biggest thing we have been lacking here in Corpus is a fashion scene, which people have been saying for years,” said Jennifer Larson, runway model for PART Apparel, “This opportunity is huge for these businesses because it allows people to be aware.” Last Sunday, the First Annual Coastal Bend Fashion Showcase took place at the American Bank Center in the Henry Garret Ballroom, which was sponsored by TheCrushGirls.com, Grande Communications and 97.5 KFTX Real Country. Diana Castillo hosted the show with music by Curtis Rock and lighting by Dr. Rockstar. Hair and makeup were provided by Salon Palomo, Salon Deluna, Tease Salon, Yvonne Vaiz and Megan Martinez. “The show was exactly, if not well over what I expected,” said Corey Risper, owner of Corey Risper. “I’ve had a lot of feedback about my fashions and that leads me to believe that this event will allow recognition of my store.” The showcase included fashion shows from eight local boutiques; Kaymare, Corey Risper, GiGi’s Intimate Apparel, Sashay Boutique, PART: Peace through art Apparel, Cosa Bella, Frank’s Extreme Wear and Uptown Girl Fashion Boutique. Truth Revealed

For those of us who have not boarded the bus before, the bus is like a locked door holding many mysteries inside. As spectators, we only see or hear the rumors about what takes place on the inside of the large metal vehicle. However, three riders shared their stories from within the mysterious bus and maybe those mysterious rumors we have heard about the bus will come to an end. Full story

Memories

All walks of life on the “B”

Riders new and old commute across town

I hopped on the B-Line shortly after my classes finished. Much to my displeasure, I had totally missed the first journalism class and I was determined to make up for it by doing a bang-up job on this assignment. I settled in my seat and looked at the people from all walks of life around me. The bus filled in as people clamored on, heading to as many destinations as there were faces. I was headed everywhere and nowhere, a passenger with no true destination. As it happened, I didn't have to start my dialogue. Instead, my dialogue came to me. "Hey man, could you tell me where the mall is?" a man in his early 30s with thick-rimmed glasses asked me. Full story

Getting Fit

New year, new body resolutions

Improving your health for the new year

In 2010, Corpus Christi was named the Fattest City in America. Many citizens took that as a wake-up call and started working towards bettering their health in hopes of improving their lives and do their part to help Corpus Christi shed this dubious distinction. The recent holiday season might have brought on new resolve or perhaps some new unwanted pounds, forcing some to, once again, resolve to get fit. Full story

Del Mar Vikings voyage to the state capitol

Students meet state reps in Austin

Last Wednesday, over 70 students from Del Mar College joined other community colleges to attend the Texas Community College Student Day in Austin where they attended a meeting of the Texas House of Representatives, toured the state capitol building, and spoke with legislators about the many issues officials will consider in the 82nd session. "A lot of times, students have not had the opportunity to have the extensive tour of the capitol, much less access to the elected officials in their respective offices. It's a wonderful learning experience to be involved in this trip," DMC President Mark Escamilla said. Full story

Gonzales Moves Beyond Tragedy to Success

One big fall changed the way Manuel Gonzales wanted to live his life. "Now I don't want to just live. I want to have meaning," he said. Ten years ago, a fall sent Gonzales and his friend, Porfirio Porfi Favela, plunging 200 feet down a mountain. Favela was killed in the accident while Gonzales crawled back up the mountain with a broken leg, calling for help. Full story
