Students and faculty will gather in the Harvin Center this Thursday to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day in an event sponsored by the Department of Social Sciences.

According to Teresa Klein, chair of the DMC Environmental Management Committee, faculty will gather at 8:45 a.m on the West Campus by the Maintenance Building for the first event of the day, planting an oak tree donated by the Clean Economy Coalition.

DMC President Mark Escamilla and Pat Suter, a long-time environmentalist and chair of the Coastal Bend Sierra Club, will speak at the ceremony.

A continuation of the day’s events will take place in the Harvin Center on the East Campus. A poster display contest will be held and all Earth Day-themed posters will be on display for viewing from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Klein said prizes for the contest will be determined soon.

Two documentaries will be shown in Room 433 of the William F. White Library. A viewing of “The Cove,” 2009 Academy Award-winning film for Best Documentary, will begin at 11 a.m.

The second documentary, “Food Inc.” a 2010 Academy Award nominee for Best Documentary Feature, will be shown at 1 p.m.

Earth Day was designed to promote conservation awareness, and appreciation for the Earth’s environment. It was founded in 1970 by the late U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in and is celebrated annually in various countries all over the world.

The deadline for submitting Earth Day-themed posters will be April 21. Those interested in participating in the poster display contest or who would like more information about these events should contact Assistant Professor of Political Science Adrian Clark at aclark14@ delmar.edu or 698-1639.

All Earth Day 2010 events are free and open to the public.
