The “It’s a Girl Thing” seminar, designed to make a difference in a community suffering from high teenage pregnancy rates, low self-esteem, and family issues, is coming to Richardson Performance Hall for the first time this Friday and Saturday.

“Our conference began eight years ago in local high schools and we are excited to see that it’s grown enough to need a larger facility, which of course is Del Mar College,” said Director Sarah Pitzer.

Speaker Victorya Rogers has been traveling the country speaking at conferences, churches, retreats, colleges and more for eight years.

“We think it’s pretty fantastic to ask middle school and high school girls to come to a college campus for a conference where they may never have stepped foot on a college campus before,” Pitzer said.

“It’s a Girl Thing” is designed to bring middle- and high-school students together to talk about the problems they face while growing up as speakers who have been through it give advice and guide the attendees with the help of their parents or guardians.

“It’s a great conference where you can learn so many things about what girls go through, and how to spot ‘Mr. Right,’” said Erin, a middle school student who attended the 2009 seminar.

“It’s a lot of fun – great music, great speakers,” said Nicole, a high school student from Aransas Pass.

The conference is designed to create a venue that addresses important issues for teens and their mothers or mentors. The cost is $30 for both days.

The It’s a Girl Thing organization is a non-profit with 13 women on the community-wide board.

The group’s mission statement is “to encourage teenage girls to be virtuous young women in a world that doesn’t always care about moral and ethical standards.”
