The DMC Art and Drama Departments hosted the Opening Reception for the 44th Annual National Drawing and Small Sculpture Show last Friday in the Joseph A. Cain Memorial Art Gallery.

“Museums were far away 44 years ago and there was very little contemporary art being shown in the city so we started the show to acquaint students with contemporary art and with contemporary thinking about art,” said Randy Flowers, professor of Art.

The show featured contemporary works of art from artists across the country. Nationally-renowned sculptor Ronald Koehler – who recently visited the campus and gave a talk about his body of work – served as juror for the show.

Kohler’s work is displayed in the Smithsonian Institute, but students can view his work right here because DMC owns several of his works, two of which are on permanent display on the fifth floor of the William F. White Jr. library.

As the juror, Kohler selected the artwork that was displayed from prints submitted to him by the artists. DMC provided two $2000 awards for sculpture and $700 and $800 drawing awards.

“There is something here for everybody,” said Flowers. The artists “are people who have noticed something and instead of writing or doing a TV program, they draw and sculpt to show us what they’ve noticed,” Flowers said.

Flowers designed the installation of the show, which involved the strategic planning of the room and technical elements including lighting and positioning of the pieces.

The art will be displayed through May 7. Gallery hours are Mon-Thurs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Friday 9 a.m. to noon. Contact the DMC Art office at 698-1216 for further information.
