The Joint Committee on Education in Radiologic technology (JRCERT), the only agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education for evaluating and accrediting education programs in radiography, recently granted eight more years of accreditation to the DMC Radiologic Technology Program.

The DMC Radiology Program has been providing over 90 percent of the technologists for local medical imaging workforce, according to David G. Arreguin, chair of Department of Dental & Imaging Technology.

“If you go to any clinic facility to get an X-ray taken, about 95 percent of the time it is a Del Mar graduate,” said Arreguin.

The program has received recognition of its continuing commitment to academic excellence and quality patient care.

“I like to express a great deal of gratitude to all the staff every day,” said Arreguin. “Recognition for their hard work is necessary.”

The program has four full-time faculty members – Raquel Tapia, program director; Melinda Wren, clinical coordinator; Ismael Garcia, associate professor; and M. Velma Pena, instructor – and six adjunct clinical instructors.

Only one fourth of applicants to the program (25 out of 100-150) are accepted and the competitive nature of the program gives the staff confidence in their students, said Tapia.

“We have excellent students that demonstrate strong initiative desire to learn and to do a good job,” said Tapia. “The majority of the students have a primary goal to help people, we can’t ask for anything better than that.”

Future plans for the program include further involvement in additional clinical sites to allow increased enrollment .

“Del Mar College’s Radiologic Technology program is one of the longest-running programs offered at DMC,” said Tapia. “We take pride in keeping the tradition going.”
