The newly formed Del Mar College Alumni Association will be hosting its first scholarship fundraiser on February 11th ,2010 at the Joseph A. Cain Memorial Art Gallery from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
Located in the Fine Arts Center on Del Mar College East, the DMC Alumni Association will be hosting a mixer, “Decadence”, to help raise funds for the alumni scholarship for Culinary Arts and Art majors.
“I’m really excited about the new Del Mar Alumni Association,” says Coral Rape, a Del Mar student majoring in Liberal Arts, “It shows that once you leave here [Del Mar] you can always come back to help and support the college.”
The members of the DMC Alumni will be able to socialize with old peers, learn about what events are happening at Del Mar College, and maybe even some social networking.
Any student that has taken a course from Del Mar College can become a member of the DMC Alumni Association.
“An alumni is anyone who has taken any class, whether it was credit or noncredit, at Del Mar College,” says Yvette Lara, assistant director of alumni services. “To sign up, students can log on to our webpage on the College’s site. There’s no fee to join.”
Throughout the mixer, alumni and students will be able to sample different desserts during “Decadence”, that will be prepared by the Culinary Arts students.
Some of the desserts will include cream puffs, chocolate and lemon mousse, miniature tarts in Bavarian cream and chocolate, assorted truffles and petit fours, along with coffee or wine.
“It’s really nice that the Culinary Arts students are getting involved with the mixer and making desserts,” says Rape, “It brings the event full circle.”
Also at the “Decadence”, the alumni and students can place bids on Valentine’s Day themed items donated by students from both the Art and Culinary Arts programs during a silent auction. All proceeds will go towards the scholarship fundraiser.
While the event takes place in the Cain Gallery, members and guests can look at the annual Tri- Group Exhibition, which includes art from the Watercolor Society of South Texas, the Southwest Sculpture Society, and the South Texas Art league.
Admission is a $10 donation to the Alumni Association, benefiting the Alumni Scholarship. For more information about the event, call 361-698-1031 or go to www. delmar.edu/alumni.
