The DMC chapter of the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education (TACHE) held the organization’s 11th Annual Baile and 150 guests in poodle skirts and leather jackets (honoring this year’s 1950s theme) raised $3,600 for student scholarships.
“The dance went well. We try to target the Del Mar community, the TACHE members and the local community to encourage support,” said Veronica Gutierrez, DMC TACHE president.
TACHE finds it necessary to continue to expand its services as more students qualify for scholarships TACHE provides that cover tuition and text book expenses, according to Gutierrez.
Growing support from students and the community has enabled TACHE’s scholarship fund to grow from $500 in 1996 to $4,800 presently, according to the TACHE home site.
The increased proceeds provide additional funding for opportunities such as the General Education Development (GED) scholarship (one of the four TACHE scholarships).
To qualify for the GED scholarship, students must have earned their GED and be prepared to pursue their degree at DMC.
The TACHE Emergency Book Scholarship, providing $150 every semester for four current DMC students, is an additional opportunity for students made possible by sponsors, staff and TACHE fundraisers such as the upcoming June Barbecue.
Gutierrez said TACHE officers take pride in providing economically challenged students with the means to overcome potential economic difficulties that could negatively effect their pursuit of a college degree.
“We are here to target low socioeconomic students because they are the ones that have the hardest time staying in school,” says Gutierrez.
Applications for the TACHE Book Scholarships will be available via TACHE officers in mid-June and the DMC Foundation Office has applications for the general TACHE scholarships throughout the semester.
