Del Mar Drama Associate Professor Carl Yowell will direct David Hare’s innovative dark comedy “The Secret Rapture” February 26-27 at 7:30 p.m. and February 28th at 2 p.m. The play will be held at Del Mar College in the Barlett Theatre on Audiences should expect to depicts “real human behavior” in the play as Yowell explains the play to be “a shocking of recognition” which with holds many real life situations that certainly an audience member can relate to.
In this particular play, Hare emphasizes real human behavior but keeps it fresh with dramatic roles and unusual dialogue, Yowell mention that the play is intended for mature audiences only. The play consists of only six roles. The largest role is Isobel, a young artist who is struggling to do the right actions that lead as an advantage for her widowed stepmother Katherine. Isobel’s sister Marion on the other hand materializes as if she wishes to do the right thing, but actually is that of the opposite, Yowell explains in this play Isobel is more the philosopher in the story Isobel is an artist and is more concerned of the effects of her choices that she tries to make to help her mother. Marion is the politician in the family she promises simplicity but really uses her persuasion as a result to her own advantage and not what can help her mother or in some cases people characters in the story. The stepmother Katherine is a candid alcoholic who cannot seem to control her outrages due to her being an alcoholic. Isobel’s boyfriend/business partner Irwin has an odd way of showing his fidelity to Isobel. Marion’s husband Tom is a born-again Christian businessman who struggles with his faith.
In recognition to Hare’s detailed dialogue to what everyday life can be, Yowell has been wishing to promote this play publicly at Del Mar for an extended amount of time. As Yowell explains that The Secret Rapture attractive dialogue can be found in Hare’s writing of not only this play but his whole style of writing. Yowell describes that this particular play is what actors “love to sink their teeth into” because its characters are subtle, complex and contradictory. The dialoge of the play in Yowell eyes is certainly an “actor’s show” and one that should challenge the cast.
