Erotic, blurred and vivid are some words you could use to describe the photographic art of Texas native Wes Carson, who the DMC Art Department will be welcoming back to Corpus Christi at 11 a.m. tomorrow in Room 242 in the Fine Arts Building.

Carson began his adventure with photographs back in 1984 at Carroll High School. Growing up with the access to a dark room at home, Carson was exposed to photography at a young age, thanks to his parents.

After achieving an undergraduate education at Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara, Carson went on to New York to work for fashion photographer Irving Penn.

“There is no question that he has been a tremendous inspiration and great influence on my career,” said Carson.

“I have been influenced by other fashion photographers from the same era particularly, Richard Avedon and Helmut Newton. I always admired the way that they were able to make art and commercial photographs simultaneously,” he said.

Carson learned to become more creative when it came to taking pictures. As opposed to most photographers who try to capture stillness, he has found beauty in motion.

“One of the recurring themes in my work plays upon the fact that photographs are moments captured in time. There is a lot of blurring of the image due to long exposures that exaggerate the passage of time,” Carson said.

“I also photograph the reflected image, through mirrors or other reflective surfaces like water. I am very interested in how to distort the image with the camera,” he said.

Carson’s out-of-the-box thinking is what makes him so unique and his pictures stand out from the mundane.

Carson said, “Learn the history of your medium and make work in your own cultural/generational way and your time. Do what you want to do and don’t worry about making money. A good education will give you options down the road.”
