H1N1 claims life of student

Nino D. Espinosa, 35 used to go to work every day as chef in a restaurant in Downtown Corpus Christi, he was non traditional student at DMC working full time, attending school full time and raising his two sons, he was a culinary arts major – on April 2, Espinosa lost the battle to the H1N1 flu virus. Espinosa’s death is the 11th H1N1-related in Nueces County since the first one reported May 2009. He came to the Del Mar College to fulfill his dream – open his own restaurant. “He wanted to do things the right way by returning to school,” said Espinosa’s sister Jennifer Garza. Full story

SGA constitution in question

The Del Mar Student Government Association has yet to submit a signed constitution. Vice President of the DMC Chapter of LULAC Ruben Figueroa presented the concern to John Crowell, SGA president, during the SGA/RSO meeting last Wednesday. Figueroa told Crowell, “I do have a copy of the constitution and I’m not too sure whether or not it was actually ratified by an advisor or faculty member.” Full story

An Applied Associates in Mexican-American Studies degree and courses in Mexican-American studies may be added to the DMC degree offerings due to the efforts of a group of administrators, faculty and staff who have worked on developing a future for the degree at the college. Full story

DMC Hall of Fame Winners

DMC adds six more students to Hall of Fame

Six students – Philip Perez, Angela Schwengler, Heather Moreno, Brady Thomas Mcnultly, Megan Beltran, and Jose Tavares – were inducted into the DMC 2010 Hall of Fame and Billy Bob Long and Christopher Burnett were named Instructor of the Year for the East and West Campuses, respectively, during the 59th Annual Recognition Ceremony last Thursday. Pell Grant now available for summer sessions

This summer, Pell Grants will be available to students who where enrolled full time for the Fall and Spring semesters, and whose grant funds have been used thanks to the Higher Education Amendment passed in 2009. Many students are unaware of this new service available to them, but are encouraged to take advantage of the benefit that may mean being able to graduate sooner. Full story
