Scholarships are basically free funds awarded to students (money that does not need to be repaid) and aid is awarded based on specific requirements.

What many students don’t know is that there are thousands of scholarships up for grabs – all students need to do is apply for the possibility of becoming a recipient.

One important factor to consider is that all scholarships are different and have different requirements and not all students meet the criteria for awards.

However, there are scholarship searches that help students locate specific scholarships they qualify for and for which they can apply and web sites devoted to helping students find scholarship money.

One site used by the Transfer Net Program is Bridges.com. “It is a site with over 900 majors. High school and transfer students can use this site by filling out information, They are then matched with scholarships they can apply for,” said Tanis Thompson, Team leader for the DMC 2+2+2 Transfer Grant.

Fastweb.com is another scholarship search web site that can give students useful information on scholarships, jobs and internships and colleges and college life.

When researching scholarships, students should look closely at the requirements.

Many are awarded based specifically on the students’ GPA, college major, college level and credits earned, financial need and community involvement. Some scholarships require essays along with personal information.

DMC offers students resources on campus and in the Career and Transfer (CAT) center that can assist students with finding scholarships.

“Students come in pretty regularly asking about scholarships. The CAT center has a reference library that has books on scholarships, jobs and careers, colleges, all available for students to take advantage of and use these resources,” said Raul Flores, CAT Center student employee.

There are scholarships for virtually anyone and many of the scholarships on these sites have floating deadlines throughout the year, so students should check deadlines and apply by the designated date.
