DMC adds six more students to Hall of Fame

Six students – Philip Perez, Angela Schwengler, Heather Moreno, Brady Thomas Mcnultly, Megan Beltran, and Jose Tavares – were inducted into the DMC 2010 Hall of Fame and Billy Bob Long and Christopher Burnett were named Instructor of the Year for the East and West Campuses, respectively, during the 59th Annual Recognition Ceremony last Thursday.

Being named to the Hall of Fame is the highest honor bestowed on a student.

“These are the finest scholars Del Mar has to offer,” said Sarah Contreras, associate professor of Speech. “I want to create a spirit of energy and excitement for this wonderful night.”

Guerro said, “I’m very excited. I’m just glad to be a finalist. It means a great deal to me and it’s very important and it’s a great honor for Del Mar and to represent Del Mar.”

Beltran said, “The adrenaline and just walking across the stage. I was just ecstatic. I’ve know a lot of people who received this award and I’ve been so inspired by them and so achieving this goal has been an outstanding things in my life. “

Over 100 awards were distributed in recognition of outstanding academic students in their respective disciplines. Awardees were hand-selected by their instructors from thousands of their peers.

During this process, their academic performance in and outside their major was scrutinized. Honors students must maintain 24 college credit hours with honors designation, maintain an A or B and 3.0 GPA or above.

Long is a professor of biology and Burnett is an instructor for Aviation Maintenance.

This was Long’s third Instructor of the Year award. He said in his acceptance speech, “My goal was to be the best husband, father, and teacher and faculty member. I’ve succeeded at my three highest priorities.”

In his acceptance speech, Burnett expressed his love for teaching and described his departure and subsequent return to teaching. “I enjoy it. It seems to run in the family,” said Burnett whose children have also become teachers.

Instructor of the Year nominees and faculty and staff members being honored Faculty and staff members selected by students who felt the DMC employees had an important influence on their lives were honored with a special blue-ribbon seating area.

Exie Hall, professor of Mathematics, announced the 29 winners of the Who’s Who Among American Junior Colleges. This national designation requires that students maintain a 3.5 GPA.
