This summer, Pell Grants will be available to students who where enrolled full time for the Fall and Spring semesters, and whose grant funds have been used thanks to the Higher Education Amendment passed in 2009.
Many students are unaware of this new service available to them, but are encouraged to take advantage of the benefit that may mean being able to graduate sooner.
Full-time students who have used all their grant funds are eligible for a summer grant as long as they are taking a total of six credit hours for each summer session.
According to DMC Director of Financial Aid Henry Garcia, students can still qualify for a full summer grant if they enroll in the first summer session for three credit hours and another three credit hours in the second summer session. However, the Pell Grant funds will not be distributed until the start of the second summer session.
DMC student Jaylon Ormand said, “It’s opening up opportunities for more students who don’t have the funds to attend summer school and allows these students to get their degree faster.”
There are stipulations for qualification for the summer Pell Grant. Students must first have been enrolled for the Fall and Spring semesters taking a minimum of 12 credit hours and passing at least nine hours in both semesters.
DMC student Erica Posos said, “I think its great for the students who care about graduating, but I would hate to see it taken advantage of by students who are just looking for another way to get free money.”
Students who are interested in applying for a summer Pell Grant can pick up a DMC resource application and drop it off with the Financial Aid Office for processing.
