In the past few weeks, the DMC Student Government Association (SGA) gained a new president and has now lost an adviser.
Counselor John Prezas resigned from his SGA adviser position last Friday. Prezas said his reason for leaving the group is due to his new position as adviser of the DMC Council of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC).
"LULAC is my priority right now. If I didn't have this adviser position, then I would probably still be part of SGA," Prezas said.
Regarding the progress of SGA, Prezas said he encourages the group to think about what the students are looking for in their student government.
"I hope SGA keeps going and I hope they think about the students and the faculty and focus on their needs."
Prezas said he feels there is conflict with SGA right now involving meetings and the time they're scheduled.
"At Del Mar College, we have a wide variety of students, and most of them have families or have the need to go to work right after class. Having meetings at 6 o'clock at night makes it difficult for students to participate," Prezas said.
"I can't speak for others, but they might sense a conflict with that also."
Prezas said he looks forward to working with LULAC members on helping all students obtain scholarships and tuition funding.
"We hope to help our community with community service and raising money for scholarships. LULAC is here for all students, not only Hispanics," Prezas said.
