The Resource for Excellence in Communication Center (REC) Center can be found on the second floor of the Memorial Classroom Building in Room 211. The REC Center offers students as well as faculty many services.

The mission of the REC Center, as stated in its informational flier, is to emphasize instruction in effective communication skills for students' academic, professional and personal lives. The center aims to create a relaxing environment where all students can prepare and practice oral presentations or projects.

The REC Center is Del Mar's best kept secret," said Mendy Meurer Assistant Instructor of the Department of Languages and Reading.

The audio-visual component of the lab offers 16 computers, TV's, as well as DVD players. For students who need extra help with their speeches, the lab has video-taped speeches and instructional tapes available for viewing.

"The lab staff is composed of 11 faculty and adjuncts qualified to help students looking for one-on-one assistance" said Muerer.

Lab assistants can answer technical questions and take time to assist students in developing speeches or other projects.

The Video Practice Rooms are three multi-use rooms that are equipped with camcorders and television sets. These rooms are primarily used for speech students to record themselves performing speeches for practice and self-analysis. These rooms can also be used for group projects or other classes that may require a student to prepare presentations.

A Conversation Room is also available at the REC Center. Unlike the busier lab portion of the center, this room is quiet and comfortable. Couches can accommodate a group of students or someone just looking for a quiet place to read.

"Someone is always here to help" said Debbie Alvarado a lab assistant at the REC Center. The staff is friendly and enthusiastic about assisting lab users. The lab remains busy, according to Alvarado the lab sees "approximately 100 students" in a day and "sometimes teachers even bring their students".

The REC Center is open Monday through Thursday from 7:30am to 8pm, Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and closed weekends.
