The Del Mar Student Government Association has yet to submit a signed constitution.

Vice President of the DMC Chapter of LULAC Ruben Figueroa presented the concern to John Crowell, SGA president, during the SGA/RSO meeting last Wednesday.

Figueroa told Crowell, “I do have a copy of the constitution and I’m not too sure whether or not it was actually ratified by an advisor or faculty member.”

Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) are required to file a constitution with the SLCL Office in order for a club to be official, according to the RSO handbook.

“There should be a constitution in the office of Student Leadership and Campus Life office from all of the clubs and organizations, but we don’t have a signed copy of the SGA’s constitution,” said Beverly Cage, interim director of Student Leadership and Campus Life, who was in attendance at the meeting.

Crowell said he submitted the constitution to RSO officers via e-mail and gave a signed copy to the SLCL Office.

“Whether a clerical error has been made and people have misplaced it, we have done our part to submit it,” said Crowell after the meeting adjourned.

Cage said the day after the meeting, she checked with the SLCL Office and the Office of Student Development to verify that there is no signed copy of the new constitution on file.

“The constitution was submitted when it was signed and copies were submitted to all the RSOs via-email for their vote at the beginning of last semester,” said Crowell. However the one sent out, which Figueroa had, was not signed.

The concern about the missing SGA constitution was a topic of discussion among student leaders and RSO officers at the meeting. However, Cage said that with no constitution on file, the organization is operating on the SGA constitution of 2005.

“I believe they are still able to operate, but it may be under the old constitution,” said Cage.

During the meeting, Crowell said the signed new version of the constitution will be turned in “no later than Wednesday of next week [tomorrow].”

Also during the meeting, the purchase of 800 SGA T-shirts to be distributed to students sometime next semester was approved. Student activity funds will be used to purchase the T-shirts.

Dean Sloan, interim Dean of Business and Finance, who was also attending the meeting, asked Crowell if he had a distribution plan for the T-shirts since there are over 12,000 students at the college so not everyone will receive a T-shirt.

Crowell and other SGA officers said the T-shirts will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis to students with ID being required so no student will receive more than one T-shirt.

Funds were also approved to purchase new banners for the East and West Campuses ($415) and almost $1,000 worth of school supplies (Scantrons, Blue Books, pens, pencils and other commonly-used items) to be given to students as needed.
