During a meeting of the Student Government Association (SGA) and Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) last Wednesday, Jason Saladiner, director of Student Leadership and Campus Life, addressed the bickering that occurred during the last SGA/RSO meeting and said,

“All it does is make us look like a bunch of children. That cannot accomplish anything,” he said

John Crowell, SGA president, said he wants to run the SGA meetings like Board of Regents meetings. “This will help things run more smoothly and hopefully accomplish more together as students,” he said.

Renato Ramirez, SGA adviser, said the incidents that occurred at the last meeting need to change because of the rudeness contained in the statements.

“If the person continues, they will be banned to speak or attend meetings,” said Ramirez. “Not talking or addressing an issue in an appropriate manner will not be tolerated.”

The SGA is planning to create a Rules Committee to help come up with ideas and vote on Constitution adjustments.

Jeremy Sirio, a DMC student, spoke to the SGA about pushing to bring back the DMC Viking mascot.

“Ninety percent of students were for bringing back the Viking,” he said. “The other 10 percent were against it because of the symbolization of a Viking.” He said this information was based on a survey of 185 DMC students.

Shannon Hudspeth, SGA West Campus vice president, suggested that Sirio come up with some positives about the Viking and present it at the next meeting. Crowell also suggested looking at the costs that would go into bringing back the Viking.

The SGA also plans to form a Student Service Fees Committee composed of five members that will control how money is allocated.

SGA members also discussed how they would like to make DMC a more veteran-friendly campus since more than half the students are veterans.

“How can we make this college better for us and our students that will follow us?” said Crowell. “That is was SGA is all about.”

Each RSO representative was given an SGA T-shirt, two DMC highlighters, two DMC pens and a DMC key chain.

There will be no meeting on March 17 due to Spring Break and the next SGA/RSO meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 7, at 6 p.m. in the Coleman Center, West Campus.
