At the age of 36, I decided to finish the college degree I started 15 years ago.
My first class of my first semester was News Gathering and Writing, a class that I was interested in only because I wanted to get back into writing.
I was so intimidated to be back in school in the first place, and here I was in a class full of young and, for the most part, inspiring journalists. I had absolutely no interest in becoming a journalist. I just wanted to write.
After spending the last 15 years in the areas of marketing and public relations, I was looking to learn quick. As in all my classes and head on out with a degree. Boy, was I ever wrong.
In 10 days I will graduate with an Associate Degree in Journalism and a long list of distinguished honors.
I was the Sports Page editor for the Foghorn. I was a part of the staff that took home 36 awards during Texas Intercollegiate Press Association annual competition, taking home four of my own. I went to major sporting events, interviewed Archie Manning, Hunter Pence and local boxer Alfonso Lopez.
More important than any of this, I am walking away with memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.
Thank you Philip, Natalia, Steph G and Muilenburg for being a constant source of support, inspiration and motivation.
Congratulations to my fellow graduates. I hope you take as much from your experience at Del Mar College as I have.
