Guitar gamers could play somewhere else

The Harvin Student Center is the focal point of student activity. Many students use it for recreation, a place for gathering information and a place to relax and eat lunch. One thing the Harvin Center has become is a place of study.

However, studying in the Harvin Center has not quite been an easy task for students. Many of them need to eat before they take the next test and can’t seem to do it because of all the high-pitched noise mainly coming from the other students.

One major factor in the noise department is the “Rock Band” sessions that go on throughout the week.

This is not to say that students should not participate in these activities – it’s just that some students would like to study and eat without someone screaming “Cat Scratch Fever” in their ears.

The studious student may find refuge in the library since it’s supposed to be quiet, but even if they can study with total silence that does not mean they can eat while studying as they can in the Harvin Center.

With so many activities that go on in the Harvin Center, one might ask “Where can I go to eat and study at the same time?”

The answer is nowhere here on campus except in your car, but that is just uncomfortable and awkward and receives a lot of strange stares.

What is really interesting is that the solution to this problem is very simple and in plain sight. The Board of Regents (BOR) has a conference room that was renovated years ago for their use, but that they don’t use most of the time.

If the BOR is not going to use this room, why can’t the noisemakers use the room for their jam sessions during the week? Think about it . . . if the “Rock Band” people use this room, they cut down the noise by a good percentage.

Granted it won’t be completely quiet when that happens, but at least there will be some reduction in noise. This might be only a temporary solution because the BOR may end up raising a stink about I, but the point is, students will have a place to rock out with their game and other students will at least get some piece of mind and quiet.

There is nothing wrong with games or playing a game with music, or sounding like a jackass while trying to sing with the game. It’s just better done somewhere else in a room with no distractions.

@ bothered- why in the world are you carrying so many textbooks when backpacks were invented long ago, why is your food not on a tray and aren't you going to have to go outside anyway? It sounds like someone enjoys placing obstacles in their way for the sake of complaining. "Oh God! The noise!" "Oh God! The wind, rain and possibility that it could snow since it happened a few years ago. What if I don't have a snow suit?" Get real and if you have so much food on your tray that it's impossible to walk the few feet to the library or even a table outside then maybe carrying books and walking isn't such a bad idea.

Oh yes! That's what I have always wanted to do. Let me go over to Aramark to get my hot lunch with all my textbooks and learning material, put a drink and food in my hand, walk outside where it may be raining, windy or just to damned hot to walk over to the Library, go to the second floor or fifth floor. I mean...that makes much more sense, right? Maybe we should develop an actual Rec Center in the Regents Dining Room considering they don't actually use it for anything.

This article and its first comment is like the equivalent of an old crabby neighbor yelling at the college students next door telling them to turn down the music. DMC may be a learning institution, but not Harvard and not all of it's students are 40 year olds that have given up on having fun. Most college's have things like this. It's what keeps people interested.

The Harvin Center is NOT the only place where you can eat and study. Must people be reminded that the Library is close by and the 2nd and 5th floors have study rooms where food is allowed. I don't believe I've ever been to a cafeteria that has complete silence. Think back to high school and middle school. The Harvin center is more of a student rec center. Don't like it? Go to the library where there IS peace and quite and stop complaining.
Can't find a quite place to eat!

Well, the way I see it is that Del Mar College is a learning institution, why are events like this held in the only place where a student should be able to eat and study in quite. Mind you the annoying high school students can cause similar problems. Del Mar's image is getting worse. There needs to be some level of respect maintained, this is not a Arcade after all.
