Online classes are an option for many students who don’t have the means of transportation or enough time in their day to make it to the DMC campus and, though we have a choice for the most part, there are times that it isn’t made clear that these classes are computer-based.
This can become a problem when enrolling online without an advisor.
Without a doubt, many instructors are strict when it comes to attendance. I strongly believe that if you have an online class, attendance shouldn’t be mandatory and a student shouldn’t be reprimanded for not attending.
As long as the work is done and turned by the deadline, attendance shouldn’t be an issue.
However, not only is attendance an issue, (I’m sure many can agree with this) the fact that you register for a class not knowing it is online is another.
Many students have probably faced this problem more than once and it can disappointing when they are expecting a regular class.
For those who are not computer-savvy, it is likely that they become annoyed when finding out that they are enrolled in an online class that requires a lot of work on the computer.
Personally, if I enroll myself in a class, I expect the student-to-teacher type of instruction. I feel like I learn better, I understand clearer and I can ask questions as they come to mind.
Needless to say, online classes can be nice and convenient for people who are busy, work full time jobs or have children, but they are not for everybody.
According to business major Todd Chederquist, it is hard to get a good in the classroom education, “being that there are so many different ways to do college.”
