Choosing a job while in college at times can be a crucial decision. Do I want to work with food? Do I want to work in an office? If I work in a bar, will I be able to stand the hours and the common actions of drunken people? Does my career coincide with my future career goals and reasoning for attending college?

Yes indeed, every job has its ups and downs, but it’s up to you to decide what you can tolerate.

The main question we as college students (or at least a large majority of us) are concerned with is how much money we will pull from working at our choice of job.

Lots of times, the most money can be made waitressing, bartending or both. I have been through my fair share of different types of jobs and I must admit that there is one job that I always choose to go back to in my time of need: waitressing.

If you have bills to pay and must support yourself, working for minimum wage is not a logical solution unless you are willing to put in more than 40 hours a week, which is nearly impossible if you are going to school full time.

My first job was a minimum wage job, which I enjoyed before I was introduced to monthly bills.

My second job was as a hostess/server at a busy restaurant. This is when I discovered that it was a little easier to make more money in a shorter amount of time.

The restaurant industry is full of college students just trying to get by, so the majority of the managers are willing to work with your school schedule and are very flexible with your hours.

I have also experienced working in a bar as a waitress. Although the money was a little better, the hours didn’t agree with my schedule.

Getting out at four in the morning and having to be up by 10 a.m. is seemingly contradictory.

Overall, if you are supporting yourself in college full time and are in need of a flexible, decent-paying job, waitressing is the way to go.
