It is time DMC honored former students who have lost their lives while serving in the Armed Forces with a memorial that would make a great addition to our campus. Because this year is the college’s 75th anniversary, it only seems fitting to do it now.

DMC has held over 100 graduation exercises with thousands of graduates. Add all the students who have attended even one class and consider how many of these former students served in the military and lost their lives.

There were 11 graduating classes before World War II ended, and many of our graduates served in that war.

We must remember those who left school to serve, some by choice and some by way of the draft.

Many of these former students from the past 75 years never returned and instead gave their lives to protect the rights of other Americans.

It would be fitting that we erect a memorial to all those who have made the sacrifice for all of us today. When we consider all those wars and actions that have occurred while the school has been in existence, there is a very large number to honor.

The memorial should be a gift from the students and alumni and families of alumni of the college, without using college funds.

It should be designed and built here on campus, by students and alumni. This would truly make it a gift.

A very good place to place it would be on the oval in the parking lot coming off Baldwin.

A large Peace Pole, with translations in the different languages where military members have died, could be the base of the flagpole. Flags could be gifts from the families, students or alumni. Bricks could tell the names of those who gave their lives for us.

This would be fitting and worthy of the college and the students of this college, which could grow, as time requires.
