My husband and I went fishing when we were dating as teenagers. I wasn’t very good at it and at the age of 18 he was already a “pro.” We were along the Bayfront here in Corpus Christi. He would have to cast my line out because my casting only landed me a couple of feet from where we were every time. I would get frustrated because I couldn’t cast “way out there where all the fish were” like he could.
Finally, after a couple of hours without catching anything, he said, “The first one to catch a fish gets free dinner anywhere.” I said, “Okay,” and he added, “Everyone casts his own line out.” Knowing that I would surely lose, I started asking him where he wanted to eat. So there we were and after several short casts, I ended up with a “bird’s nest.”
I definitely was not going to win our bet. I spent a long time trying to free my reel from the huge bundle of tangles I created trying to cast out my line.
All the while, he was laughing and repeatedly casting out his line, reeling it in, and then casting it out again. Fortunately for me, there was no fish at the end of his line.
After what seemed like an hour working out the tangled mess in my reel, it was free. I had a massive long line in the water. “Well that was fun!” I said, still trying to roll up my reel with the loose line in the water.
Slowly I kept reeling up the line while he was still fishing. I eventually started feeling my line getting a bit tight. Interestingly, my line became a bit tighter as I kept reeling it in. He then noticed that my line was tight and said, “Oh no, don’t tell me…”
He could not believe his eyes as my line started moving. I was now excited and stood up and started walking backwards! He asked, “What are you doing?” and I replied, “I don’t know, I’m trying to get my fish out of the water!” He left me alone to bring in my fish. I finally figured out that all you need to do is keep reeling and that alone brings the fish towards you. I reeled in a 12-inch Trout.
“I won!” I shouted. “Of course, you would,” he said, then asked me, “Where do you want to go for supper?” I answered, “I don’t know, you pick.
