Blake’s Outdoor Report

Foghorn

This is my last “Outdoor Report.” I am torn between actually writing something useful or using all my allotted space to hog the limelight. I think I can do both.

This time of year is best for fishing as we all get a break from school or at least a lightened load. When talking to a buddy about my columns, he asked me how I went about writing them.

He suggested I write about what I think only and let people know where I stand on certain issues, so for anyone who is curious, this is how I feel.

Trout, Redfish, and Flounder are the only Bay fish that matter.

Spanish Mackerel and King are alright offshore fish, as long as you cook them quickly.

Shark fishing is more useful for sitting around drinking with your buddies than actual productive fishing as you may only catch one shark with hours and hours of effort.

Don’t be too cheap with your rod and reel because you get what you pay for.

Using bait is an acceptable form of fishing, so long as using lures isn’t feasible. The only lures that matter are the ones that are cheap. Too many people buy flashy lures that are expensive and don’t catch any more fish that the surrounding fishermen using the bottom of the line soft plastics.

Using a spoon that is not a casting spoon is a waste of time. A casting spoon is heavy and allows you to place the cast where you wish.

No one matters when it comes to fishing but yourself. If your buddies think you are dumb, but you are having fun, why worry about the trivial things in life?

Taking long trips to fish are just as fun as the short ones as long as the ride is enjoyable.

The most important thing in fishing is the buddy you take with you.

You don’t need a boat, a kayak, or a secret spot to enjoy fishing. As long as there is water and a fishing pole, there is no reason to not enjoy your time.

Don’t read too much into the professional outdoors writers as many of them don’t fish like the rest of us. Most of the time the places and lures they say are good are just opinions from guys they talk to.

The only way to not catch a fish is not go fishing. The only way to not enjoy the fishing trip is to place something above it.

Fishing isn’t all that matters in life, but if you are able to set aside time to fish with no worries, you will see how much it relieves stress.

All in all, I have tried to bring you a fishing report from a fisherman not a writer. I hope that my outdoor columns have helped you all catch fish or at least have some fun during the attempt.

After many weeks of fishing for homework (yeah, pretty awesome), I am a bit sad to leave this place. If you see me out on the water, grab a pole and let’s fish. Peace out, Del Mar.
