Fishing with the President

First and foremost, let me state that fishing is always a great time, but fishing with the DMC president was an awesome experience.

The day started early at about 6:30 a.m. at Bird Island Basin. We put the boat in and ran down to the land cut. We were all excited about the possibility of some big Trout, Redfish and Drum and as soon as we hit the first drop off, it was anchors aweigh and straight to business.

Using live shrimp, Escamilla’s buddies Jim Fenner and Gary Light drew first blood. We fished until a bit after 11 a.m. then went down to a cabin that belonged to one of their buddies to have lunch.

Once we filled up on sandwiches, chips, grapes, apples and Sprite, we headed back out going further south into the cut. The first spot we hit up gave me a couple of keeper Trout while we kept running up to the drop off and heading down to stay ahead of a barge.

We all headed back up north closer to Baffin Bay and anchored off next to a little cove, casting shrimp in the hopes of catching a large Trout. After several pleas to the Trout to bite, Gary landed the catch of the day – a 22-inch Trout that overshadowed my 24-inch Redfish.

After several hours of fishing the drop offs and grass lines, we pulled anchor and headed to an area at the end of Baffin where oyster reefs and rocks line the bottom. We drifted this area hoping for some monster Trout or even a Flounder.

After finishing this drift, we headed back to dock to put the boat back on the trailer. All in all, we ended up with a Whiting (after letting several go), six Trout, and my lone Redfish.

The trip was a great chance to fish and talk with Escamilla and I found out that he is a really personable guy. Straightforward and easy-going, Escamilla was a great fishing partner and I could really tell that he cared about fishing as much as I did.

The bulk of our conversations centered on family, friends, and the good ol’ days, but when we talked about school, I could see that he was happy where he was.

There is no denying that Escamilla is the type of guy who listens to people and is very proactive with his responsibilities. Before the trip, I was a bit nervous about looking like a fool since I write weekly about how to catch fish. It was very refreshing to find out he is just like me when it comes to fishing.

The trip was a success as soon as the boat hit the water as we were guaranteed poles in the water, wind in our hair and friends aboard to have a good time with.

The fish were merely an additive to an already great time. The main idea to take from fishing with the president really isn’t where, when or how to catch fish, but that what matters in life and what you love should be there in the forefront.

Whether it is fishing or something else, do what you love and share it with others – it makes the experience that much better.
