DMC kicked off its Spring 2010 Intramural season January 19 with the bi-annual 100-Mile Challenge.

There is still plenty of time to sign up and registration ends Monday, March 1. The last day to turn in miles is Monday, April 19. The 100-mile Challenge is based on the honor system and participants keep a weekly mileage log based on how many miles they walk, run, swim or bike each week.

Those aren’t the only activities that you have to do to log miles and it doesn’t necessarily have to be a workout, according to Intramural Director Chari Heck. “You can give your own value to anything that is physically active such as kayaking or walking to classes. Everything is based on the honor system.”

“The 100-Mile Challenge challenges participants to push themselves for the semester to get in shape,” Intramurals Director Chari Heck said.

There are incentives for doing something good for your health: Participants who reach 100 miles receive a T-shirt and those who reach 200 miles receive a cinch bag.

Thursday, Feb. 11, the Intramurals Department will hold a Poker Fun Run, which is free and open to all students and staff.

The Poker Fun Run is a one-mile course that weaves through the campus with five stations at various points in the run where you receive a playing card as you go through each station.

At the end of the run, prizes will be given out according to the participant’s poker hand. The run begins at 3 p.m. Students and faculty can pre-register by Wednesday Feb. 10 or register on-site from 2-2:45 p.m. before the run.

East Campus DMC Intramurals will hold a Sweet Heart Social Dance Competition Friday, Feb. 12 at 10 a.m. in the Harvin Student Center. Registration ends at 9:45 a.m..

There will also be a “Singled Out”-style game show for students after the dance competition. Prizes will include gift cards, T-shirts, cinch bags and water bottles.

A doubles tennis tournament will be held on Friday, Feb. 5 at 10 a.m. All participants must register by 9 a.m. at the Kinesiology Building.

Heck said all students are encouraged to participate. The events are free.

The Foghorn currently has 13 students and faculty participating in the 100-mile Challenge and Director of Intramurals Chari Heck encourages more DMC club members to get involved in intramurals.

The Foghorn staff has entered the 100-Mile Challenge. Be sure to check the sports page each week to compare your mileage to our staffers and see who’s leading and who’s last.

The Dodge Ball League begins Tuesday, April 6 at 3 p.m. and the captains’ meeting will be held Tuesday, March 30 at 4 p.m.
