By the time the next issue of the Foghorn comes out, the NFL season will be over, and we will be into the postseason. Caught in a predicament, we decided to put a few students here at Del Mar on the spot and find out their Super Bowl picks, even though we are only a little over half way through the season.

“I just have a good feeling about the Saints this year,” said Del Mar’s Kati Parker, in picking New Orleans to win it all. It is easy to see why too, with Drew Brees leading one of the league’s most prolific offenses and their new look defense under coordinator Greg Williams harassing other teams quarterbacks.

Thomas Rincon believes that the Bengals will take home the trophy though, defeating Parker’s Saints in the process. “New Orleans has some serious “D” but they are young and will choke in the end,” said Rincon. The Bengals certainly have all the makings to be a champion, and while they are receiving excellent quarterback play from Carson Palmer, their ability to run the ball and stop the run has been the key to Cincinnati’s success. The fact that they are already 5-0 in their division, with a very real possibility of going undefeated in the AFC North, doesn’t hurt either.

Bob Barker predicts the Saints will win the Super Bowl, “After many years of Brown Bag Aint’s, the Saints win the Big One. It’s been long overdue, super bowl champion N-ORLEEENS Saints! Party on Bourbon Street!”

Andy Gomez believes his beloved Cowboys will not only finally win a playoff game, but also a Super Bowl. “I think the Cowboys will get into the playoffs by winning the wildcard game, and that momentum, along with Miles Austin as the #1 receiver, they will win the Super Bowl,” said Gomez. Tony Romo, however, will have to step up and be an elite quarterback after the month of November if the Cowboys want to fulfill Gomez’s, and owner Jerry Jones’ lofty expectations. An improved defense and special teams will go a long way in succeeding through December and beyond.

I found the lack of faith Del Mar students had in Peyton Manning and the Colts, and Tom Brady and the Patriots surprising to say the least, especially on the heels of one of the greatest regular season games ever played Sunday Night. New Orleans seems to be a trendy pick as the best team in the league currently, but I have to wonder whether their defense and running game will be able to hold up in the rigors of the playoffs.
